The Surgeon Athlete: Keys to Longevity — Reflecting on Dr. Kern Singh’s Keynote in New Delhi
Dr. Kern Singh recently had the honor of delivering a special evening keynote, “The Surgeon Athlete: Keys to Longevity,” at the World Neurosciences Summit (WNS-V) in New Delhi, India—an international gathering of neurosurgeons and spine surgeons hosted by Medanta and the Medanta Institute of Neurosciences.
The idea behind the talk
The premise is simple to state and harder to live: surgeons who train like athletes can operate for a lifetime. Spine surgery—and endoscopic surgery in particular—is physically demanding in ways that are not discussed nearly enough. Long cases, sustained precision, and careers spanning decades require surgeons to treat their own bodies with the same discipline they bring to patient care.
Dr. Singh’s talk drew on themes he has been developing through his podcast, Spinal Strength, and his upcoming book of the same name. His message is that longevity in the field is not solely about surgical skill; it also depends on physical preparation, recovery, and applying the discipline of an athlete to a surgical career.
Why this conversation matters beyond the OR
Surgeon burnout, career-shortening injuries, and declining precision over the course of a career are real yet under-discussed problems in the field. Dr. Singh believes that framing surgical longevity through the lens of athletic training—including conditioning, recovery, and sustainable mechanics—offers a perspective largely absent from traditional surgical education and one the profession needs more of.
A trip beyond the podium
Beyond the summit, the visit was one of the most memorable trips of Dr. Singh’s life. Engaging with neurosurgeons and spine surgeons from across India and around the world was genuinely energizing—the kind of exchange that reinforced why the field is worth the years required to master it.
Dr. Singh also had the opportunity to experience India in a way he will never forget, including visits to the Taj Mahal and Jaipur and attending the Ganga Aarti at Haridwar, which he described as one of the most moving experiences he has ever witnessed. Combined with time spent with family in Delhi and hospitality that exceeded every expectation, the experience became something much bigger than a conference trip.
Grateful to the organizers, my fellow speakers, and everyone who made this week what it was. I’m already looking forward to returning.
